A renowned journalist and Controller of Procurement and Supply Services at the Government Stores, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, has died.
His passing has left a deep void in both the media industry and the public service, where he served with distinction.
The government spokesperson and Minister of Information, Moses Kunkuyu, has confirmed the death.
In his statement, Kunkuyu expressed sadness and shock at the loss of a man who has contributed immensely to national development.
Kunkuyu said Mtumodzi fell ill last night.
He explained that he only received the message of his passing today, signaling the suddenness of the situation.
The minister added that further details surrounding Mtumodzi’s death and arrangements will be announced at a later time.
He emphasized that Mtumodzi will be deeply missed as a hardworking and patriotic son of the country.
According to Kunkuyu, Mtumodzi dedicated his life to serving the country in various capacities, especially in the media and public procurement sectors.
Over the years, Mtumodzi built a name as a fearless journalist, respected communicator, and a public servant whose integrity and work ethic stood out.
Many Malawians remember him as a voice of reason and professionalism in both public discourse and governance matters.
Beyond journalism, Mtumodzi contributed significantly to the public procurement system, ensuring transparency and efficiency in government supply services.
His colleagues describe him as humble, meticulous, and a man of strong principles.
In a separate statement, family representative Leria Mseka Likongwe has said that the funeral program will be released later.
She said the family is currently engaged in consultations to ensure that all traditional and logistical matters are handled respectfully.
The family has asked the public and media to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fellow journalists, government officials, and members of the public who knew Mtumodzi personally or through his work.
Many have taken to social media to express their condolences and share fond memories of his influence in their professional and personal lives.
His legacy will likely endure in the many journalists he mentored, the systems he helped strengthen, and the ideals of patriotism he consistently stood for.
As the nation waits for the full funeral program, it is clear that Malawi has lost not just a public servant, but a towering figure in its communication and governance spheres.
Mtumodzi’s death comes at a time when Malawi continues to reflect on the value of ethical leadership, transparency, and service.

The nation bows its head in solemn remembrance, bidding farewell to one of its finest sons.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
