Police in Chikwawa have arrested two young men in connection with the alleged vandalism and theft of water meters belonging to the Southern Region Water Board.
The suspects, identified as Flyton Ganizani, aged 19, and Mphatso Seleman, aged 18, are currently being held in police custody.
According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Chikwawa Police Station, Chancy Mfune, the suspects are accused of stealing water meters valued at MK1,712,000.
Mfune explained that police launched investigations after receiving several complaints about theft and damage to the water board’s equipment in the district.
She stated that the arrest of Ganizani and Seleman followed intensified efforts by law enforcement to curb the rising cases of vandalism affecting public utility infrastructure.
The suspects, she added, are expected to appear before court soon to answer charges bordering on theft and vandalism.
Both Ganizani and Seleman come from Chinkhambi Village under Traditional Authority Kasisi in Chikwawa District.
The Southern Region Water Board has over the years faced significant challenges due to recurring acts of sabotage and theft of essential water supply infrastructure.
Authorities have repeatedly warned that such acts not only strain the board’s operations but also disrupt water supply services to thousands of residents.
Police have since reiterated their commitment to protecting public property and ensuring that perpetrators of such crimes are brought to justice.
