A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has expressed doubts over opposition party leaders attending 61 years of the country’s independence at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on the 6th July, 2025.
Kamphangala said there have been numerous concerns raised by opposition party leaders to President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on politically motivated arrests to silence dissenting voices and selective application of justice, but none of their concerns have been addressed.
He said opposition party leaders are siding with Malawians that are in pain and suffering over skyrocketing prices of essential goods, and high prices of the staple food-maize making many families sleeping with empty stomachs, Malawians have no reasons to celebrate Independence Day.
The MCP diehard said already media reports are indicating that former President and DPP leader Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has not received an invitation letter to the 6th July, Independence Day celebrations, saying this is not a surprise to DPP members and supporters.
DPP National Spokesperson Hon. Shadric Namalomba has been quoted in the media having said that even Professor Mutharika was invited, he could not go claiming that Malawi is on fire and has questioned the MCP government why holding celebrations in a country of hunger, no medicines in hospitals, sky-rocketing prices of essential goods and panga wielding MCP thugs terrorizing and hacking members of the opposition parties.
The MCP diehard said independence and freedom to poor Malawians means that they have enough food to eat and sale the surplus but in 5 years of President chakwera’s leadership, they have sailed through calamities and calamities with no hope for a better tomorrow.
He said Tea Rooms have all been closed in the typical rural areas due to high cost of sugar and people who used to go to Tea rooms have nowhere to go and cannot join government celebrating 6th July, Independence Day.
Kamphangala said the 6th July, 2025 Independence Day celebrations will only be celebrated by few Malawians that are advocating for “Boma ndilomweli silikuchoka” while millions of Malawians are in abstract poverty with no hope for a better tomorrow.
He said if he was an advisor to President Chakwera, he would have advised him to hold no 6th July Independence Day celebrations and instead channel the resources to subsidize the cost of sugar to be affordable to Malawians living in the rural areas.
“If I was President Chakwera I would have cancelled the 2025 Independence Day celebrations, but to President Chakwera, he cannot do this because he is surrounded by people who don’t help him in no way, their eyes are bent on huge allowances,” said Kamphangala.
He has reminded President Chakwera, the Clergy to conduct National Service of prayers for the 6th July celebrations, the organizing committee at national level and all Malawians ready for this celebrations to pray for millions of Malawians that are sleeping with empty stomachs for Gods to comfort them because their leaders have failed to listen to their cries.
