National Bank of Malawi has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming lives at grassroots level by donating a K10 million borehole to Kalimwini Village in Lilongwe, providing hundreds of residents with reliable access to clean and safe drinking water.

The borehole, handed over during a community ceremony, is part of the bank’s annual Christmas initiatives—an impactful corporate social responsibility programme that channels resources towards projects that directly improve the welfare of Malawians.

Speaking at the event, National Bank Gateway Service Centre Manager Leonard Siula said the intervention was a direct response to challenges faced by the community, particularly the long distances residents had to walk in search of safe water.

“As a bank that exists to serve the people of Malawi, we believe our role goes beyond financial services. Access to clean water is fundamental to health, dignity and development. This borehole is our way of standing with Kalimwini Village and ensuring families have a safe and sustainable water source,” said Siula.

He added that National Bank remains committed to supporting community-driven initiatives that promote health, education and economic empowerment across the country.

Traditional Authority Kalimwini, Village Head Benado, described the donation as timely and life-changing, especially as the rainy season often exposes the community to waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.

“This borehole has come at a critical time. During the rains, unsafe water sources put our people—especially children and the elderly—at serious risk. With this borehole, our community now has access to clean water, which will greatly improve our health and quality of life,” he said.

Community members echoed the sentiments, saying the borehole will ease the burden on women and children who previously spent hours fetching water from distant and unsafe sources.

The Kalimwini borehole project is one of several initiatives National Bank of Malawi is rolling out this festive season, underscoring the institution’s enduring commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Through such investments, National Bank continues to position itself not only as a trusted financial partner, but also as a responsible corporate citizen dedicated to building healthier, stronger and more resilient communities across Malawi.
