The Economic Freedom Movement (EFM) has issued a blunt challenge to former President Lazarus Chakwera, demanding that he publicly disclose the identities of individuals he previously claimed were sabotaging government operations.

Addressing the media during a press briefing, EFM president Joseph Peshi said vague allegations without names only serve to shield perpetrators of corruption and weaken public accountability. Peshi argued that if Chakwera genuinely possesses information on those undermining state institutions, the nation deserves to know who they are.

He said naming the alleged culprits would be a critical step toward restoring integrity in public service and ensuring that individuals implicated in corruption scandals across key government agencies — including the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) — are investigated and prosecuted without delay.

“Malawi cannot continue to operate on rumours and political statements without action,” Peshi said, stressing that silence or half-truths only embolden corruption networks entrenched within government systems.

Peshi further warned the current administration against selective justice, urging law enforcement agencies to act impartially when making arrests and pursuing criminal cases. He cautioned that targeting political opponents while shielding allies would undermine public trust and perpetuate a culture of impunity.

Despite the criticism, Peshi acknowledged early signs of progress under the current government, commending efforts aimed at stabilising the kwacha, improving fuel availability, and reviving the country’s struggling economy. However, he stressed that economic recovery would be meaningless without decisive action against corruption.

“Economic stability cannot coexist with corruption,” Peshi said. “Real reform requires courage, transparency, and equal application of the law — regardless of status or political affiliation.”
