Communities in Dowa District have received a major boost in their fight against water scarcity after Malawi Relief Funds UK Organization drilled 12 boreholes across the district to improve access to safe and clean water.
The latest borehole was officially handed over today to communities under Senior Group Mponela during a ceremony attended by local leaders and residents.
Speaking at the event, the organization’s Section Supervisor, Muhammad Abubakar, said the initiative is aimed at addressing persistent water challenges that have left many families vulnerable to waterborne diseases.
“We want to see people accessing safe and clean water. Our mission is purely humanitarian. We do not carry out charity work for business or political purposes,” said Abubakar.
He emphasized that access to clean water is a basic human right and critical to improving health standards, especially in rural communities where residents often depend on unsafe water sources.
Senior Group Mponela commended the organization for what he described as a life-changing intervention. He said for many years, people in his area have struggled to access clean water, putting their lives at risk.
“Our people have suffered for a long time. This borehole will protect them from diseases and reduce the hardships they have been facing,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Wezz Nyirenda, expressed gratitude for the timely support, noting that women and girls have been walking long distances to fetch water.
“This donation has come at the right time. We used to spend hours searching for water. Now things will change for us,” she said.
Over 300 households are expected to benefit from the 12 boreholes drilled in Dowa District, marking a significant step toward improving sanitation, health, and livelihoods in the area.
