Sponsors of the 2026 NBS Charity Shield, NBS Bank plc, have distanced themselves from the incident that saw Lilongwe City Mayor Alex Peter Banda removed from the stage during the trophy presentation at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
In a statement released following the controversy, the bank emphasized that its involvement in the event was strictly limited to sponsorship. NBS Bank clarified that all matters relating to event coordination, protocol, and security fall under the responsibility of the organisers, led by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), in line with FIFA guidelines.
The bank further stated that none of its personnel were involved in the removal of the mayor or any other individual from the stage. However, it expressed regret over the incident and the discomfort it caused.
