NKHAMENYA, Malawi — Nkhamenya Mission Hospital has received a much-needed ultrasound scanning machine through a partnership between Mothers’ Fun Run and Malawi Healthcare Support UK (Mahecas), a development expected to significantly improve diagnostic services at the facility.

The donation comes as a major relief to the hospital, which has been operating without an ultrasound machine, forcing clinicians to rely heavily on clinical assessments when diagnosing patients, particularly expectant mothers.

Hospital Director Lumbua Katenda said the absence of the equipment had posed serious challenges in patient management and increased the risk of diagnostic errors.Kaupa Demands urgent action on damaged Kasungu bridges

“Using our clinical judgment to make decisions poses a risk of errors and is not recommended in current medical practice,” Katenda said.

The new machine is expected to enhance the hospital’s ability to monitor pregnancies, detect complications early, and improve overall patient outcomes.

Nation Publications Limited Director Khrishna Achuthan said the donation was motivated by concerns over the risks faced by pregnant women and newborn babies due to the lack of diagnostic equipment at the hospital.

“We felt that we should come in and help after noting the risks faced by pregnant women and newborns due to the lack of diagnostic equipment,” he said.Blantyre District Hospital and Mangochi–Makanjira Road Set for 2026/27 Start

Speaking on behalf of Malawi Healthcare Support UK (Mahecas), Lawrence Gogodas said the organisation responded swiftly after learning about the hospital’s needs through Achuthan.

According to Achuthan, Mothers’ Fun Run, an annual charity initiative, continues to rotate its support programmes across different regions of Malawi, targeting critical healthcare needs and improving access to essential medical services.

The donation underscores the importance of partnerships between local and international organisations in strengthening Malawi’s healthcare system and improving maternal and child health services in underserved communities.
