The Malawi men’s football team has set its sights on making history at the 2026 Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games in Botswana after opening its campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts Botswana.

Head coach Milias Pofera Jegwe said the team is determined to become the first Malawi side to reach the CUCSA Games final after an impressive start to the tournament.Flames Secure Victory Over Burkina Faso in AFCON Qualifiers

Malawi secured all three points on Wednesday thanks to a 75th-minute winner from Fortune Thauka. Botswana had an opportunity to take the lead earlier in the match but failed to convert a first-half penalty.

Speaking after the victory, Jegwe praised his players for their determination in a challenging match played against the hosts in front of their home supporters.

“We want to go home as history makers. We are taking each and every game as it comes. We are equally prepared—the games are tough, but we will prepare the boys well. We want to reach the final for the first time in the history of the CUCSA Games,” said Jegwe.
