Malawi marks 62 years of self-rule today, with the United Democratic Front (UDF) calling on citizens to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for the country’s independence while embracing a new vision for national development.

In a statement released on Independence Day, UDF president Atupele Muluzi said the anniversary should not only be a time to celebrate the nation’s history but also an opportunity to build a brighter future for all Malawians.Atupele Muluzi Urges Urgent Economic Reforms as Malawi Faces Deepening Crisis

Muluzi said Malawi’s journey has been shaped by two historic milestones—the attainment of independence and the restoration of multi-party democracy—and argued that the current generation has a responsibility to lead what he described as the “Third Liberation.”

“Our history has been marked by two defining moments. The First Liberation gave us independence, the second restored multi-party democracy. Today our generation is called to lead the Third Liberation, the Liberation that delivers a better life for every Malawian,” he said.Atupele Muluzi clarifies his remarks as not an insult to Mutharika

According to Muluzi, the Third Liberation should focus on creating jobs, expanding economic opportunities, restoring the dignity of citizens, strengthening national institutions and ensuring that economic growth benefits every Malawian.

He added that achieving these goals will require unity, patriotism and a shared commitment to excellence.

“As we celebrate the past, we must also build the future,” Muluzi said, urging Malawians to come together with a common purpose to advance the country’s development.Atupele Muluzi Earns Global Recognition with Top 100 Future Builders Nomination
