Senior Chief Mposa Demands Answers Over Missing K100 Million Hunger Relief Funds in Machinga
By Suleman Chitera
Senior Chief Mposa has demanded an explanation from the Machinga District Council over the disappearance of approximately K100 million intended for hunger relief, after 1,121 households under his jurisdiction were left out of a government cash transfer programme.
The affected families were expected to receive K90,000 each under the Malawi Government’s emergency hunger relief initiative, which was launched in April to support vulnerable households affected by food shortages.hunger free Machinga? MCP’S Rodrick Mulonya unveiles big promises
The government allocated about K3 billion to the Machinga District Council to assist nearly 30,000 households across the district. The cash transfers were designed to enable beneficiaries to purchase food during the ongoing hunger crisis.
However, according to Senior Chief Mposa, his area remains the only traditional authority in Machinga District where eligible beneficiaries have not received the assistance, despite the programme being implemented in other parts of the district.
Speaking to Mibawa TV, the traditional leader expressed concern over the unexplained delay, saying repeated efforts to seek clarification from district council officials have yielded no satisfactory answers.Machinga District Council improves health services with internally generated revenue
He said he has raised the issue several times, including during full council meetings, but officials have not provided a clear explanation regarding the whereabouts of the funds or when the affected households will receive their payments.
The missing allocation, estimated at about K100 million, has raised concerns among residents, many of whom continue to struggle with food insecurity while awaiting the promised government support.
When contacted for comment, Machinga District Council spokesperson Leonard Masauli confirmed that the council is aware that beneficiaries under Senior Chief Mposa have not yet received the funds. He, however, requested more time before issuing a detailed explanation on the matter.
Senior Chief Mposa has since appealed to the Malawi Government to urgently intervene, investigate the circumstances surrounding the delayed funds, and ensure that all 1,121 affected households receive the financial assistance they were promised.NICO Group Launches Maize Distribution to Feed Hungry Families in Machinga
The development has intensified calls for transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, particularly those intended to support vulnerable communities during periods of food insecurity. Government authorities are yet to announce whether an official investigation into the alleged missing funds will be launched.
