The African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 has praised Malawi’s Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, for their historic performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing their achievement as an inspiration to girls across Africa.
In a congratulatory statement issued from Gaborone on Monday, AUSC Region 5 Chief Executive Officer Stanley Mutoya said the Scorchers’ remarkable campaign had transcended football by demonstrating what determination, belief and hard work can achieve.
The Scorchers made history by reaching the WAFCON final on their tournament debut and securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil—the first time Malawi’s women’s national team has qualified for the global tournament.
“Across our Region, young girls watched you compete, believe and make history. What you have achieved is bigger than football,” Mutoya said in the statement.
He congratulated the players and technical team, as well as the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), the Malawi Government and Malawians for supporting the team throughout its historic campaign.
Mutoya said the Scorchers had provided young girls across the region with a powerful example that sporting dreams can become reality when talent is matched with commitment and opportunities.
“Brazil 2027 awaits, and Region 5 will be behind you,” he said.
A historic breakthrough for Malawi
The Scorchers’ qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup represents a landmark moment for Malawian football.
For years, Malawi’s women’s football teams have competed at regional and continental level while developing a growing pool of talented players. However, reaching the WAFCON final and qualifying for the World Cup has taken the country’s women’s game to a new level.
The achievement is particularly significant because the Scorchers achieved the milestone on their first appearance at the WAFCON tournament.
Their performance has also raised the profile of women’s football in Malawi and demonstrated the potential that exists when female players are given opportunities to compete at high level.
Region 5 competitions playing a role
The Scorchers’ success has also highlighted the importance of regional competitions in developing athletes who can eventually compete on the continental and global stage.
Several members of the current Scorchers squad previously participated in the 2022 AUSC Region 5 Games, providing them with valuable international competition and exposure at an important stage of their development.
Among the players who featured at the Region 5 Games are Rose Kadzere, Faith Chimzimu, Leticia Chinyamula and Sarah Mulimbika.
Their journey illustrates how regional sporting competitions can serve as an important pathway for identifying, developing and preparing young athletes for bigger challenges.
For girls aspiring to become professional footballers, the success of players who came through regional competitions offers tangible evidence that participation at youth and regional level can open doors to the highest levels of the sport.
More than a football achievement
The Scorchers’ historic campaign has generated excitement well beyond Malawi’s football community.
Their success has given young girls across the region new role models and challenged traditional perceptions about the opportunities available to women and girls in sport.
For many aspiring female footballers, seeing Malawian players compete successfully against some of Africa’s strongest teams provides a powerful message: talent can emerge from anywhere, and with the right support, it can reach the world stage.
The AUSC Region 5 recognition therefore goes beyond congratulating a successful team. It acknowledges the wider social and developmental impact of the Scorchers’ achievement.
Eyes now on Brazil 2027
With their historic WAFCON campaign behind them, attention will now turn to the Scorchers’ preparations for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The qualification will present Malawi with an unprecedented opportunity to showcase its women’s football talent on the world stage.
It will also place greater responsibility on football authorities, government, sponsors and other stakeholders to ensure the team receives adequate preparation, resources, competitive matches and logistical support ahead of the tournament.
The Scorchers’ journey has already demonstrated what Malawi’s women footballers can accomplish.
As Mutoya’s message makes clear, their achievement is no longer only about winning matches. It is about inspiring a new generation of African girls to believe that they too can compete, succeed and make history.
With Brazil 2027 ahead, the Scorchers have become more than a national football team—they have emerged as a symbol of possibility for girls across the region.
