Sheikh Omar Nkachelenga has called for the restoration and modernisation of Quran House, saying the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) needs a permanent and fully functional headquarters to strengthen its institutional independence and improve service delivery.
Nkachelenga said restoring Quran House would give MAM an opportunity to operate from its own administrative centre rather than continue spending resources on rented office accommodation.
He stressed that Quran House should not simply remain a property bearing the association’s name, but should become a fully operational institution serving MAM and the wider Muslim community.
According to Nkachelenga, the proposed redevelopment presents an opportunity to address questions surrounding the protection of institutional assets, financial management and the long-term sustainability of the association.
He said the restoration should go beyond repainting buildings or making cosmetic improvements, arguing that Quran House needs properly equipped offices, modern administrative facilities and effective property management systems.
Nkachelenga also emphasised the importance of transparency and accountability in managing MAM’s assets, saying institutional resources must be protected and used responsibly to support the association’s development.
He believes that having a functional headquarters would improve MAM’s administrative operations, strengthen its ability to serve Muslims across the country and reduce its dependence on external office arrangements.
The call also highlights the importance of preserving the association’s institutional heritage while preparing it for the demands of modern administration.
Nkachelenga said restoring Quran House would provide an opportunity to build a stronger institutional foundation based on independence, responsible leadership, accountability and sustainable development.
He maintained that the vision should be to restore Quran House, strengthen MAM and secure a lasting institutional legacy for future generations of Malawian Muslims.
