Minister of Information Shadraic Namalomba has called on the public to stop blaming the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government for the purchase of Amaryllis Hotel, saying the process was initiated in 2023 during the administration of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Namalomba made the remarks in Parliament following a presentation by MCP spokesperson on Finance, Economic Affairs and Decentralisation, Peter Dimba, during his contribution to the national budget debate.
Responding to the comments, Namalomba said it is inaccurate to attribute responsibility for the hotel purchase to the DPP government because the transaction process began before the party assumed power.
He explained that the acquisition involved the Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF), which operates as an independent institution responsible for managing pension funds for public servants.
According to Namalomba, the Minister of Finance does not directly manage pension funds and therefore cannot be held responsible for the payments associated with the purchase.
“The Minister of Finance does not run the pension fund. The Public Service Pension Trust Fund is an independent body that manages its own investments,” he said.
The purchase of the Amaryllis Hotel has recently come under scrutiny amid ongoing discussions in Parliament regarding how the transaction was handled and whether proper procedures were followed.
Debate on the matter continues as lawmakers scrutinise the deal and its financial implications.
