The Partners in Hope [PIH] has delivered to….’’The the Dowa District Health Office [DHO] some essential cholera supplies which will go a long way towards fighting against cholera in the district as the district is registering increasing suspected cases of cholera particularly in the areas of Inkosi Chiwere.
The delivery of the items is following an appeal to partners in health interventions and all Civil Society Organizations [CSOs] implementing their various interventions in the district to work as one to serve thousands of people that are at the verge of contacting cholera viruses in the district.
Dowa has some contributing factors leading to escalating cholera cases which include contaminated water sources, lack of toilets by some households, unhygienic handling, preparation and consumption of some foods served in public gatherings.
The district recorded the first case of cholera in October, 2022 in the area of Senior Chief Msakambewa and from there, all health facilities started reporting cases with Mvera Mission and Mvera Army hit the most due to the communities’ drinking water from unprotected shallow wells.
Partners in Hope [PIH] under USAID CORE Grant is providing HIV Care and Support in seven health facilities of Dowa district and has been deeply touched with the escalation of cholera figures being reported in. the district.
On Thursday, officials of Partners in Hope [PIH] took their time delivering essential cholera supplies complementing government’s effort of delivering social services in Dowa district.
Presenting the donation to the Dowa District Health Office [DHO] at the function held at the District Hospital, PIH’s District Programs Officer Patience Ndovi, said despite her organization’s area of focus being Hiv Care and Treatment, the management through district leadership supported a timely delivery of essential supplies as a rapid response to the cholera outbreak in the district.
….’’The essential supplies such as Ringers lactate, ORS and chlorine will be used in the fight against cholera in our district,’’….She said.
And receiving the donation, District Director for Health and Social Services in Dowa Dr. Peter Makoza, thanked the Partners in Hope [PIH] for being a friend in need supporting his office with essential cholera supplies to fight against cholera in the district.
Dr. Makoza said he appreciates the work that PIH is doing in the district towards social deliveries, appealing to other CSOs and NGOs not to live his office alone saying a little of their donation will serve many communities from being infected with cholera in the district.
He said the donation is timely as it has come at the most critical time when health facilities in the district are registering increasing numbers of patients suspected of being infected with cholera.
Momentum and World Vision Malawi have also responded to assist the Dowa District Health Office with chlorine and other resources.
