The government has intensified the preservation of vegetative cover on Zomba Mountain as part of its drive to protect water catchment areas from degradation. Minister of Water, Abida Mia, led government departments and agencies in planting indigenous trees around the Mulunguzi Dam Catchment Area. The exercise involved the Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service, Zomba District City Council, chiefs, academicians, and students. Mia pledged that government will do everything possible to deal with the wanton cutting of trees which is posing a threat to Mulunguzi Dam, the major source of water for Zomba City and surrounding areas. Member of Parliament for Chikwawa-Nkombezi Abida Mia has presented money, a trophy, and jerseys to finalists of the K10 million Abida Mia Trophy. Mia said the initiative is in line with President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s wish to invest more resources in the youth. “I wish to empower the youth knowing that if they stay idle they would be less productive," said Mia. The competition was held in five zones of her constituency. Other than pumping funds into sporting activities, Mia has also been donating maize flour to the underprivileged, a gesture she has described as a top-up to the Social Cash Transfer (Mtukula Pakhomo) initiative. A fire that gutted part of Ngabu Secondary School earlier this month has left the institution with 50 mattresses against the enrolment of over 300 students. The school needs about K9 million to address the challenge. Education authorities in the district disclosed this when one of the country's corporate organisations donated mattresses to help mitigate the problem. The fire in question occurred on the 20th of this month. According to Primary Education Advisor for Ngabu Zone, Piason Kachingwe, the fire started in the school's kitchen before it eventually spread to the stores' section, where it reduced many mattresses to ashes. Water and Sanitation Minister Abida Mia has announced that free water connection initiative is for domestic useMia told the news conference on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 in the capital Lilongwe that commercial usage will be paying for connection. The minister disclosed that the connection will be 15 to 20 millimeters in diameter and 24 meters from the service line saying individuals beyond measures will be paying some charges. The meeting followed the High Court's order to stop the Board from proceeding with the implementation of the 21 Billion Kwacha water extension project in Mangochi. Three NGOs challenged the implementation of the water project at Nkhudzi Hill in Mangochi. The NGOs asked the court to order the Board to provide them with all information, documents, drawings, feasibility studies and assessment reports in relation to the project.
