2 police officers at Area 30 arrested too
With the recent surge in Trafficking in Persons cases, Police reveal they have so far arrested ten people including two police officers based at the Area 30 Police Headquarters in Lilongwe in connection to the same.
National Police spokesperson, Peter Kalaya has disclosed this without providing details and identities of the suspects.
But he says, one suspect, Martha Kalazi Mbewe, had been on the run from the time police launched their investigations on the matter.
This follows recent reports that some women and girls have been facing different abuses in households after being decent jobs outside the country.
“When we were making our first arrests, she was on the run until last Saturday evening when some well-wishers tipped us that she was hiding in Area 49. We immediately went to arrest her,” says Kalaya.
He says there will be more arrests.
Meanwhile, Kalazi is this afternoon expected to appear before a court in Lilongwe.
Poverty, lack of enforcement of laws, effects of COVID-19 and ignorance are some of the most cited factors as fueling the malpractice in Malawi.
