Rights Group Push Chakwera To Resign

President Lazarus Chakwera continues to face pleas for him to resign, as a new rights group National Congress Movement gives him 3 days to leave office or call for a referendum.
This comes barely weeks after a similar demand was made during a series of demonstrations in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Zomba championed by the Action Against Impunity.
It also comes at a time the Chakwera administration is as well facing a 21-day ultimatum to act on the country’s socio-economic challenges from the Human Rights Defenders Coalition-HRDC or face massive protests.
The group’s members presented their petition on Tuesday to hold a 3 day protest and are expecting to receive a response to their request before ending their demonstrations.
However, the District Commissioner’s office and the police are opposing the three day demos arguing its excessive.
The group’s Chairperson in the northern region Gomezgani Nkhoma has told journalists that they will still push for authorities to grant them permission.
