Rumours broke out about Cristiano Ronaldo making a return to Real Madrid when the Portuguese icon used Los Blancos’ training facilities in order to stay fit, while he searched for a club. His run at Manchester United had come to an abrupt end, after both parties decided to part ways, following the release of his interview with Piers Morgan.
In fact, he had been linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu in the summer as well, with Manchester United not being in the Champions League this season. Despite all the rumours, a return to Real Madrid did not materialise for Ronaldo though.
Ronaldo has since gone on to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, signing a deal which will make him one of the, if not the, highest paid athletes in the world.
But as reported by The Athletic (via SPORTbible), Real Madrid rejected the chance to sign Ronaldo several times. It is believed that Jorge Mendes approached the La Liga giants several times during the summer about a potential transfer.
Real Madrid rejected chance to bring back Ronaldo to Santiago Bernabeu
While a lot of fans wanted to see Ronaldo wear the Royal White jersey again, him not returning for a second stint at Real Madrid might be best for all parties.
Ronaldo is arguably the best player in Real Madrid history. At the same time though, he is set to turn 38 years of age very soon.
Also, his form has taken a massive dip in recent times, which we saw at Manchester United and also at the World Cup, where he ended up losing his place in the Portuguese starting XI in the knockout stages.
Thus, there is no guarantee that a return to Real Madrid would have been a success. And after seeing how his second stint at Manchester United turned out, it might be best to leave the memories alone.
