In a shocking move, the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has announced a power shutdown in the Northand Central region, coinciding with the United Transformation Movement’s (UTM) national convention in Mzuzu.
Insiders reveal that this sudden “maintenance” is actually a deliberate attempt to disrupt following of the convention and prevent the public from listening to the UTM newly elected president’s address.
A top EGENCO manager confessed that there were no prior plans for maintenance, and the sudden schedule change was made without explanation.
“Indeed the timing certainly raises eyebrows, we only got a communication to come up with a work schedule for major service works across the country,” he said.
UTM Spokesperson Felix Njawala exposed the sabotage, stating that they received information on Monday about ESCOM’s plans to suspend power, aiming to frustrate listeners and viewers.
“We already devised a plan to ensure the power outage doesn’t impact the convention proceedings,” said Njawala.
Despite efforts to seek clarification, EGENCO and ESCOM officials dodged questions, passing the buck from one person to another raising concerns about the government’s involvement in disrupting the opposition party’s event.
As Malawi struggles with power outages, EGENCO’s true intentions remain unclear if the Sunday power disruption is a genuine maintenance issue or a cleverly disguised attempt to stifle democracy.
