The Leader of the Opposition has expressed disappointment and concern following the government’s decision to pass two controversial amendments regarding fuel laws in Parliament. Taking to his Facebook page, he described today as a “day of great sadness,” accusing the government of exploiting its numerical majority to push through the amendments despite strong opposition from opposition MPs.
“We, the opposition, rejected these amendments because we know the government’s true intentions. They aim to use these laws as a tool to embezzle public funds under the pretense of purchasing fuel for ministers and government officials,” he wrote.
The opposition leader also criticized the manner in which the amendments were introduced, pointing to the rushed discussions and the urgency with which they were passed as evidence of a hidden agenda. “It was unsurprising that these amendments were designed to facilitate theft. The speed and lack of transparency in the process confirm this,” he added.
While acknowledging that the amendments have now been passed, the opposition has vowed to remain vigilant in exposing any corruption tied to these changes. The Leader of the Opposition assured the public that, under the leadership of Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, the opposition would work to repeal these amendments next year, stating that they are not in the best interests of Malawians.
He concluded by reaffirming the opposition’s commitment to holding the government accountable and ensuring that its questionable practices are brought to light.
