The government’s initiative to procure fuel through an international arrangement has started yielding results. According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, the government, through the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA), has successfully purchased 51.5 million liters of fuel from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The statement, signed by Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, indicates that the purchase was facilitated through an agreement between Kenya and the UAE, which Malawi utilized to address its fuel needs.

Minister Matola emphasized that the government is finalizing direct bilateral arrangements with the UAE to ensure a sustainable and independent fuel procurement system for Malawi.

President Lazarus Chakwera recently announced that a delegation from the UAE will visit Malawi to conclude discussions on this important bilateral agreement. The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to secure a stable and reliable supply of fuel amid global economic challenges.

This development marks a significant step in addressing Malawi’s fuel shortages and highlights the government’s commitment to innovative solutions to national challenges. More details are expected to emerge following the anticipated high-level talks with UAE representatives.
