On January 6, 2024, Dowa Police apprehended a woman and four men for allegedly stealing 61 bags of soya meal cakes from Mount Meru Millers Factory in Dowa District.
The incident occurred around midnight on January 6, 2024.
The suspects, all employees of Mount Meru Millers Company, have been identified as Alinafe Maliseni, 25, a DOC operator; Elliot Charles, 24, a contract supervisor; Pickson Longwe, 41, a security guard; Wakisa Napolo, 24; and Moses Ng’ona, 43.
According to Francis Zingunde, the factory’s security officer, a well-wisher tipped him off about the suspects’ plan to steal from the factory.
Zingunde promptly informed the police officers assigned to guard duties at the factory.
The police officers, remaining vigilant and alert, discovered the suspects in the act while patrolling the premises.
They arrested the suspects and recovered 61 bags of soya meal cakes worth approximately K5,000,000 (five million kwacha). Of these, 34 bags had already been moved outside the factory fence, awaiting collection by other criminals.
The suspects will soon appear in court to face a charge of theft by servant.
They hail from various villages: Alinafe Maliseni from Kwelekwele Village, Traditional Authority Kabudula, Lilongwe; Elliot Charles from Mphazi Village, Traditional Authority Kalumo, Ntchisi District; Pickson Longwe from Masini Village, Traditional Authority Chitukula; Wakisa Napolo from Kawiri Village, Traditional Authority Mkukula, Dowa District; and Moses Ng’ona from Kanjala Village, Traditional Authority Mkukula, Dowa District.
