Some Voter Registration Workers in Mulanje Complain of Unpaid Wages

By Suleman Chitera

Several workers involved in the voter registration process in Mulanje District have expressed frustration over delayed wages, saying they have yet to receive payments promised at the start of their assignments last week. These workers, who requested anonymity, revealed that they were assured of their wages when they began, yet, to date, no funds have been deposited into their bank accounts.

For those working far from their homes, the delay has become particularly burdensome as they are responsible for covering essential expenses while on duty. “It’s difficult for us as we’re working far from our homes, and we need funds for basic needs,” one worker explained.

Responding to the complaints, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa acknowledged that while most workers have received their payments, a few still have not. According to Mwafulirwa, the delays could be due to issues related to the workers’ bank accounts.

MEC’s assurance to resolve the outstanding payments brings some hope, though the affected workers remain anxious for their dues to be cleared, enabling them to continue their essential work supporting Malawi’s democratic process.
