Activist Bon Kalindo, through his team, has urged demonstrators not to be intimidated by reports of disruptions allegedly organized by members of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) at today’s protests. In a message to his supporters, Kalindo reassured protesters that they should remain steadfast and committed, despite reports of threats and intimidation aimed at dispersing them.
“Those of us who are at the demonstrations should not be afraid or run away,” Kalindo’s team stated, claiming that MCP supporters were trying to scare people off the protest grounds by threatening the young people gathered there. Kalindo, known for his bold stance against government policies he views as undemocratic, emphasized that “Malawi is bigger than the MCP” and that the rights of the people to protest and express dissent must be protected.
Kalindo further suggested that recent attempts to disrupt the gathering were driven by fears within the ruling party of seeing opposition voices gain traction. He pointed out that despite attempts to intimidate, protesters are not alone in their cause, stating, “Do they think people would be protesting without real concerns?”
Addressing rumors that some individuals have been paid by the ruling party to intimidate protesters, Kalindo warned such people to be cautious. He called for unity among Malawians, asserting that the right to protest peacefully is fundamental and must not be compromised by political intimidation or bribery.
Kalindo’s message comes at a critical time, as opposition voices across Malawi push back against what they claim is an erosion of democratic freedoms. With his encouragement, protesters have been urged to remain vigilant and united as they stand up for their beliefs in a peaceful and lawful manner.
