Flames Secure Victory Over Burkina Faso in AFCON Qualifiers

By Burnett Munthali

Malawi’s national football team, the Flames, secured an impressive 3-0 win against Burkina Faso in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers match at Bingu National Stadium, Lilongwe. This marked their first win and second clean sheet in the campaign.

The Flames dominated the match with Gabadinho Mhango opening the scoring in the first half. The team maintained their intensity in the second half, with Richard Mbulu and Llyod Aaron adding to the tally to seal a decisive victory.

This fixture was the second under the interim technical panel led by experienced coach Calisto Pasuwa, supported by assistants Peter Mponda and Pritchard Mwansa. The team had shown defensive solidity in their previous game, a goalless draw against Burundi.

While the match was a dead rubber, as Burkina Faso had already secured qualification with 10 points, the win was a morale booster for Malawi, who now have four points in Group L. Senegal, already qualified with 13 points, is set to face Burundi later tonight. The result leaves Malawi tied on points with Burundi, adding significance to their final standings in the group.

The Flames’ victory demonstrated their potential and renewed hope for their fans, even as they missed out on qualification.

Final Score:
Malawi 3 – Burkina Faso 0

Goal Scorers:

Gabadinho Mhango (1st half)

Richard Mbulu (2nd half)

Llyod Aaron (2nd half)

The Flames will now aim to build on this performance in future assignments.
