Boma Ndilomweli La DPP Li: Police Officers Echo Surprise Support for Opposition Amid Sameer Suleiman’s Arrest

By Twink Jones Gadama

In a shocking turn of events, police officers at Blantyre Police Station were heard expressing support for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Sameer Suleiman, who has been recently arrested. The officers, whose identities are anonymous echoed the phrase “Boma ndilomweli la DPP li,” which translates to “the government belongs to DPP.” This phrase has been a catch word among MCP ministers and supporters but now it is being implied that the DPP will take over from the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The arrest of Sameer Suleiman, DPP’s Organising secretary and member of Parliament for Blantyre city South East, sent shockwaves throughout the country. However, what was even more surprising was the reaction of the police officers, who seemed to be sympathetic to the DPP’s cause. According to eyewitnesses, the officers were heard saying, “We are just doing our duties because of the orders from above, but boma ndilomweli.” This statement suggests that the officers believe the DPP is the rightful government in waiting and that they are only following orders from MCP seniors.

The identity of the police officers who made these statements has been kept secret to avoid any potential reprisals. However, this reporter managed to speak to several officers, all of whom expressed support for the DPP. Some officers even disclosed that they had received orders from above to oppress Suleiman and ensure that he spends a night in jail. These revelations have raised questions about the impartiality of the police force and the potential for political interference in law enforcement.

The MCP has been in power since 2020, and its government has been criticized for its handling of various issues, including the economy and corruption. The DPP, on the other hand, has been gaining momentum in recent months, with many Malawians expressing dissatisfaction with the current government. The arrest of Suleiman has only added fuel to the fire, with many DPP supporters taking to the streets to protest his detention.

The phrase “Boma ndilomweli la DPP li” has become a rallying cry for the DPP, symbolizing the party’s determination to take over from the MCP. The fact that police officers are now echoing this phrase suggests that the DPP’s message is resonating with even those who are supposed to be impartial.

As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the battle for control of Malawi’s government is far from over. The DPP is determined to take over, and its supporters are becoming increasingly vocal. The MCP, on the other hand, is fighting to maintain its grip on power. The outcome of this struggle will have far-reaching consequences for Malawi’s future.

The international community is watching the situation closely, and many are calling for Suleiman’s release.

As the drama unfolds, one thing is certain: the people of Malawi will be watching closely to see what happens next. Will the DPP succeed in its bid to take over the government, or will the MCP manage to maintain its grip on power?

In Lilongwe Joseph Mwanamveka and some DPP members including Collins Magalasi have also been arrested by Chakwera’s government.
