YHRDN Calls For Proper Dialogue On Chilima’s Plane Clash

By Staff Reporter

The Young Human Rights Defenders Network have issued a statement regarding the inquiry findings on the plane crash that killed Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others on June 10, 2024.

The inquiry, conducted by the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) and the Malawi Commission of Inquiry, concluded that the primary factors contributing to the crash were adverse weather conditions as well as human error.

Addressing the media in Mzuzu on Friday, YHRDN chairperson Mervin Nxumayo commended the government’s efforts in facilitating an independent investigation and acknowledge the integrity and professionalism of the individuals appointed to the Commission.

“We recognize that the investigation has uncovered negligence and poor decision-making in the aviation sector,” said Nxumayo.

YHRDN further urged the government to take corrective action to address the identified shortcomings and prevent future tragedies, calling for a reconstituted commission of inquiry to investigate unresolved deaths, including those of young activists and individuals killed during anti-government protests.
