Former President of the Republic and DPP leader Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, says President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership has failed Malawians and the current state of the nation is a result of visionless administration.
Professor Mutharika said the country’s democracy, economy, and food security are under threat advising Malawi citizens that they have the power to change this MCP government on Tuesday 16th September, 2025 to reclaim the nation and restore hope, dignity and progress.
He said Malawi is standing at a critical crossroads and it is time for decisive leadership that prioritizes the people above all else expressing concerns over threats to democracy and freedoms in Malawi claiming that the MCP government has turned Malawi into a Police state.
Mutharika said citizens are living in fear of arbitrary arrests, journalists are being detained for exposing corruption, and peaceful demonstrations are met with teargas, opposition members are targeted and trust in institutions such as the MDF and the Malawi Police Service (MPS) have been destroyed.
Speaking during a National Address on Sunday night 19th January, 2025 from his residence in Mangochi, Professor Mutharika expressed his heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. Brenda Banda who now lies in a hospital bed at Kamuzu Central Hospital saying she is a victim of MCP government oppression.
Professor Mutharika said such acts are not governance, they are tyranny, observing that democracy cannot thrive in an environment of fear and intimidation sharing Malawian struggles, frustrations, and aspirations burdened by hunger, economic hardships and lack of hope for the future.
He warned the MCP government for its incompetence and corruption saying these two, have pushed Malawians to the brink, and they will no longer remain silent, urging Malawians to rise together and demand accountability from their leaders.
On hunger prevailing in the country, Professor Mutharika said this is the worst food crisis Malawi has seen in a decade saying it is a stark failure of governance claiming that the Affordable Input Programme (AIP) once seen as a beacon of hope, has become a symbol of corruption and incompetence.
Professor Mutharika expressed his deep concern with the economic situation the country is in describing it as dire, prices of basic necessities have skyrocketed saying his Administration will stabilize the economy by making basic commodities affordable, and creating opportunities for businesses for young people to thrive.
On voter registration process managed by Mec and NRB marred by logistical failures, Professor Mutharika said these are deliberate attempts by the MCP to suppress votes and this cannot be ignored by patriotic Malawians.
“The DPP is committed to safeguarding the integrity of the forthcoming September, 2025 elections by ensuring that every vote is counted and every Malawian can exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear,” said Mutharika.
