Chaos erupted in Parliament on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, when second-hand clothes vendors disrupted proceedings in protest against the rising costs of bales for used clothing.

The commotion began as the Minister of Local Government, Richard Chimwendo Banda, started addressing the chamber.

The protesting vendors, who had gathered in the public gallery, suddenly stood up and began chanting and marching in defiance, forcing ministers and members of Parliament to flee the chamber for safety.

The dramatic scene saw lawmakers hurriedly evacuating the premises as security personnel struggled to contain the situation.

According to eyewitnesses, the protesters appeared determined to make their frustrations known, demanding government intervention to address their grievances over the skyrocketing prices of second-hand clothing.

Amid the chaos, a female police officer was injured in the scuffle.

Reports indicate that she fell while trying to escape the unrest, resulting in an injury to her ear.

It is unclear whether she was caught in the stampede or pushed during the disorderly retreat.

The incident has raised concerns over security measures at Parliament, with many questioning how the vendors managed to stage such a disruptive protest within the premises.

While police eventually restored order, the disruption underscored the growing frustration among traders who rely on second-hand clothing sales for their livelihoods.

Government officials have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the protest, but the vendors have made it clear that they will not relent until authorities take concrete steps to address the economic challenges affecting their businesses.

The situation remains tense, with the possibility of further demonstrations if their demands are not met.
