Protest vehicle reduced to ashes: Lilongwe arson attack captured moments after blaze

By Burnett Munthali

Approximately one hour after a group of violent youths set ablaze a vehicle meant to transport public address equipment for protestors in Lilongwe, our correspondent Joseph Mazizi returned to the scene to assess the aftermath.

What he discovered was the complete destruction of the vehicle, which had been fully consumed by flames.

The once-functional car, essential for facilitating the Citizens for Credible Elections protest, was now reduced to a burnt-out shell.

The vehicle was originally intended to carry sound equipment used during the demonstrations advocating for electoral transparency and calling for the resignation of MEC officials.

Mazizi, upon arriving at the scene, confirmed that the fire had completely destroyed the vehicle, leaving behind twisted metal and ash.

He took detailed photographs of the wreckage, capturing the extent of the damage for the public and the record.

The attack had been carried out earlier by a group of young men suspected to be infiltrators bent on derailing the otherwise peaceful demonstration.

The arson took place in the presence of both Malawi Police Service officers and members of the Malawi Defence Force, who were stationed nearby but did not prevent the act.

This incident has amplified public outcry over state security agencies’ apparent inaction in the face of politically charged violence.

The image of the smouldering vehicle now stands as a grim symbol of the rising tension surrounding Malawi’s push for credible elections.

As the nation reels from the violent turn of events in Lilongwe, questions continue to surface about who ordered the sabotage—and why those meant to enforce law and order stood by as destruction unfolded.

For now, the charred remains of the protest vehicle serve as a powerful reminder of what is at stake when democracy is challenged not just by institutions, but by silence.
