Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba has commended the Muslim community in the Northern Region for playing an active role in the development of education by constructing an office block at Katoto Islamic Secondary School in Mzuzu City.

Speaking as the guest of honor during the official opening ceremony of the school’s new administration office on Friday, Mumba praised Muslims at Kandahar Mosque and surrounding areas for their commitment to education and community development.

“I urge all parents to send their children to school so they can grow up to become dependable and responsible citizens of our country,” he said.

Vice Chairperson of the school’s board, Dr. Daniel Hussein, revealed that the office block was built using over K50 million raised from community members and well-wishers. He thanked everyone who contributed financially and materially towards the project.

The ceremony drew a large crowd, including members of Parliament, local councillors, aspiring candidates for this year’s elections, and various Muslim clerics (Sheikhs). Beyond the office opening, the event also served as a fundraiser to support the construction of a school library and, in the future, a science laboratory.

Dr. Hussein expressed concern that a significant number of students have been transferring to other schools due to the lack of essential learning resources. He emphasized the importance of building a library and laboratory to enhance the learning environment and improve student retention at the institution.

The initiative reflects growing collaboration between religious communities and government in improving education infrastructure, especially in underserved regions.
