In a bold move that adds fresh energy to Malawi’s political landscape, Akwame Bandawe, leader of the Anyamata, Atsikana Azimayi (AAA) party, has officially joined the 2025 presidential race. On Saturday, Bandawe submitted his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), signaling his readiness to contest in the highly anticipated September 16 elections.
The youthful and vibrant leader, known for championing inclusive politics and gender equality, made headlines by naming Asiyatu Abuli as his running mate. Abuli, a respected advocate for women and youth empowerment, becomes one of the few female vice-presidential candidates in the race — a move Bandawe described as “a true reflection of our party’s values.”
“We are bringing a new vision, new voice, and new leadership that speaks to the dreams of every Malawian — men, women, and the youth alike,” Bandawe declared during his address at the nomination ceremony.
AAA, a rising party with a unique name meaning “Young Men, Young Women, and Women,” is gaining traction for its progressive agenda and appeal among first-time voters and young professionals. With Bandawe and Abuli now officially on the ballot, political analysts say the duo could shake up the traditional power dynamics and bring a new wave of political engagement.
As the countdown to September 16 begins, all eyes will be on whether Bandawe’s inclusive platform and youthful appeal can transform into a serious challenge at the polls.
