Blantyre — With just over a month to go before Malawians head to the polls on September 16, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has made a bold move — entering into an electoral alliance with the Liberation for Economic Freedom (LEF) party, led by the outspoken Prophet David Mbewe.

DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito confirmed the development, describing it as a strategic union aimed at “reshaping Malawi’s future through shared vision and transformative ideas.”

“The DPP is actively engaging with like-minded political movements,” said Mukhito. “We believe in a collective effort that puts Malawians first.”

While the announcement sparked waves across the political landscape, not all quarters within the LEF are celebrating just yet. Sources within Mbewe’s camp suggest the alliance is still “under negotiation”, with no official deal signed. “Talks are ongoing, and nothing is finalized,” a senior LEF official disclosed.

The twist? LEF is one of the three parties disqualified by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) from fielding a presidential candidate — a blow that many thought would sideline Prophet Mbewe from the race. Instead, the alliance with the DPP may offer him a strategic route back into the spotlight.

Political analysts say this partnership could reshape the voting dynamics, especially in the southern region, where both parties enjoy grassroots support and religious influence.

As the DPP keeps its cards close to the chest about other possible alliances, one thing is clear: Malawi’s political chessboard is shifting fast — and the Prophet may have just found a pulpit in national politics.
