Lilongwe, Malawi – Senior members of the UTM Party have revealed that they are adopting a framework developed by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to monitor the conduct of elections in Malawi. The two opposition parties are set to hold a joint press briefing in Lilongwe today to outline their collaborative efforts in ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process.
In an interview with Our News Platform MW, UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala explained that the meeting aims to inform Malawians about the strategies being implemented to protect the integrity of the country’s elections.
“This collaboration is crucial because both UTM and DPP share a common goal as opposition parties—to ensure that elections are free, fair, and credible,” Njawala stated.
The partnership comes amid growing concerns over electoral malpractice and the need for stronger oversight mechanisms. By leveraging the DPP’s established monitoring framework, the UTM hopes to enhance its capacity to track electoral irregularities and advocate for necessary reforms.
Political analysts suggest that this alliance could signal a broader opposition strategy to present a united front ahead of future elections. However, some observers question whether this cooperation will extend beyond electoral monitoring, given the historically competitive relationship between the two parties.
