Blantyre, Malawi – UTM leader Dalitso Kabambe has launched a scathing attack on President Lazarus Chakwera, questioning his legitimacy to seek re-election after what he calls “five years of disastrous leadership” that have left more than half of Malawians trapped in crushing poverty.

Speaking at a charged political rally in Lilongwe, Kabambe did not mince words. “How can a leader who has broken every promise, who has watched our economy collapse, and who has allowed corruption to fester, still have the audacity to ask for another term?” he thundered, as the crowd erupted in agreement.

A Nation in Crisis

Kabambe highlighted shocking statistics: inflation soaring, businesses collapsing, and unemployment at record highs. “Under Chakwera, the poor have gotten poorer while his inner circle grows richer,” he declared. “Look around you—do you see progress? Or do you see suffering?”

The UTM leader accused the Chakwera administration of empty rhetoric, pointing to failed agricultural policies, erratic electricity supply, and a healthcare system on its knees. “Five years ago, Chakwera promised change. Instead, he delivered chaos.”

Praise for Muluzi—A Subtle Jab at Chakwera’s Weakness

In a strategic move, Kabambe praised former President Bakili Muluzi for stabilizing the economy and cracking down on fraud in state-owned enterprises during his tenure. “Leadership is about action, not excuses. Muluzi handed over a functioning nation—what will Chakwera leave behind? A trail of broken dreams?”

The comparison was deliberate—a reminder that Malawi once had leaders who delivered, unlike the current administration, which Kabambe described as “all talk, no results.”

2025 Elections: A Battle for Malawi’s Soul

With elections looming, Kabambe’s fiery rhetoric signals a no-holds-barred campaign. “Malawians deserve better. They deserve a leader who doesn’t just make promises but delivers them,” he said, positioning himself as the alternative to Chakwera’s “failed experiment.”

Political analysts say Kabambe’s direct attack on Chakwera’s record could resonate with disillusioned voters. “People are angry,” said one commentator. “Kabambe is channeling that anger into a powerful political message.”

Chakwera’s Camp Fires Back

Allies of the President have dismissed Kabambe’s criticism as “desperate politics,” insisting that Chakwera has faced unprecedented global challenges, including economic fallout from the Ukraine war and climate disasters.

But Kabambe isn’t buying it. “A true leader finds solutions, not scapegoats,” he shot back. “Chakwera had his chance. Now, it’s time for change.”

As tensions rise, one thing is clear: the 2025 elections will be a fierce showdown between those who still believe in Chakwera’s vision and those, like Kabambe, who say Malawi cannot afford five more years of failure.

The question is—which side will Malawians choose?
