LILONGWE, Malawi — In a surprising turn of events, the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has publicly praised Peter Mutharika, leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), for a purported victory in the presidential election. This comes despite the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) not having released final, official results.
The UTM, led by Dalitso Kabambe, issued a statement applauding Mutharika’s claimed success, while emphasising a desire for peace and unity in Malawi. At the same time, UTM insists that the election process be transparent and fair, and calls for deeper investigations into lingering national concerns — notably, the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of former vice-president Saulos Klaus Chilima and others.
