Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah arrived in Angola on Saturday night to represent Malawi at two significant African Union gatherings, signaling the start of a crucial engagement in regional and international diplomacy.
Her plane touched down at Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport in the Icolo e Bengo province, where she was welcomed by Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. George Chaponda, Malawi’s Ambassador to Angola Margaret Constance Kamoto, along with several senior government officials.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that Dr. Ansah will participate in the 7th African Union–European Union Summit, a platform where African and European leaders will reassess their cooperation frameworks. Discussions are expected to span a wide range of issues, including peace and security, governance reforms, economic development, global partnerships, and migration.
In addition to the summit, Dr. Ansah is also expected to hold diplomatic conversations with partner countries. These talks will focus on Malawi’s current approach to tackling pressing national challenges relating to food shortages, fuel supply, fertilizer access, forex availability, and the persistent strain on pharmaceutical supplies.
This year’s AU–EU Summit carries particular historical significance as it marks 25 years of collaboration between the two blocs, reflecting decades of joint development commitments and shared strategic interests.
The summit will be jointly chaired by Angolan President João Lourenço and European Council President António Costa, bringing together key decision-makers from across both continents.
Also in attendance will be European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and African Union Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, whose presence underscores the importance of the meeting.
Guided by the theme “Promoting peace and prosperity through effective multilateralism,” the summit aims to strengthen cooperative efforts, reinforce shared priorities, and promote stability and inclusive growth across Africa and Europe.
