Former President Peter Mutharika has described the appointment of a new Japanese Ambassador to Malawi as a major boost to the long-standing cordial relations between the two countries, with renewed focus on infrastructure development and economic cooperation.

The Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Naito Yashushi, formally presented his letters of credence to Mr. Mutharika on Tuesday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, marking the official start of his diplomatic mission in Malawi.

Speaking after the ceremony, Ambassador Yashushi expressed Japan’s firm commitment to continue supporting development projects that were initiated earlier, noting that Malawi remains a key partner for Japan in the region. He emphasized that his mission will prioritize projects that directly improve the lives of ordinary Malawians.

Among the notable commitments, Ambassador Yashushi revealed that Japan will soon hand over the Lilongwe Bridge to the Government of Malawi, a key infrastructure project expected to ease traffic congestion and enhance economic activity in the capital city.

He further disclosed that Japan is considering plans to rehabilitate Bakili Muluzi International Airport, formerly known as Chileka Airport, a move that could significantly improve air transport, tourism, and trade in the country.

Mr. Mutharika welcomed the ambassador and praised Japan for its consistent support to Malawi, particularly in infrastructure, health, and capacity-building initiatives. He said the developments underscore the strength of Malawi–Japan relations and demonstrate Japan’s confidence in Malawi’s development agenda.

The engagement between Mr. Mutharika and the new Japanese envoy signals a renewed drive toward meaningful partnerships that prioritize sustainable development, infrastructure growth, and mutual cooperation for the benefit of both nations.
