Malawi football giants Mighty Wanderers FC have officially confirmed their participation in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League, following approval from club president and board chairperson Thomson Mpinganjira.
The business magnate and philanthropist has once again thrown his full weight behind the Nomads’ continental ambitions, signalling a bold statement of intent as the club seeks to restore its dominance on the African stage.
“We will join the CAF tourney. I have approved the team’s participation,” Mpinganjira confirmed. “I believe that we have a good squad to do the job.”
Renewed Continental Ambition
The decision marks another significant investment in the club’s long-term vision of reclaiming its status among Africa’s elite. As reigning national champions, Wanderers are automatically eligible for Africa’s premier inter-club competition — a stage that demands both technical quality and financial muscle.
Last season, Mpinganjira personally bankrolled the club’s campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup, injecting over K500 million to cover travel logistics, chartered flights, accommodation, allowances, and preparatory camp expenses. Despite the heavy investment, the Nomads suffered a heartbreaking exit in the first preliminary round at the hands of Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy, losing 4-3 on post-match penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw.
This time, the stakes are even higher — and so are the ambitions.
Squad Reinforcement Underway
Mpinganjira has assured supporters that the club is actively strengthening the squad ahead of the new season.
“Like every club, we are beefing up our squad off season,” he said, hinting at strategic reinforcements aimed at improving depth, tactical balance, and competitive resilience.
With the Champions League presenting a tougher competitive landscape than the Confederation Cup, Wanderers are expected to blend experienced campaigners with emerging talent to mount a serious challenge.
“Make Mighty Mighty Again”
Wanderers Director of Football Development David Kanyenda described the development as both inspiring and motivating.
“As national champions, we are obliged to participate in the continental showpiece, but the budget is always steep,” Kanyenda said. “Last year, the club president invested over K500 million, but we were eliminated and this time we want to repay our president by progressing into the group stages.”
He added that the renewed commitment reaffirms the club’s broader mission: “This is an exciting development that also reaffirms our purpose to make Mighty Mighty Again.”

Participation in the CAF Champions League offers not only prestige but also significant financial incentives, continental exposure, and invaluable experience for players and technical staff. For Wanderers — one of Malawi’s most storied clubs — the 2026/27 campaign represents an opportunity to reassert their continental credentials and inspire a new generation of supporters.
