Malawi has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening migration governance, border security, and humanitarian protection following a high-level meeting between the newly accredited Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Her Excellency Fatma Ismail Said, and the Minister of Homeland Security, Honourable Peter Mukhito.

The courtesy call took place on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, at Capital Hill in Lilongwe, where both parties discussed key areas of cooperation aimed at enhancing Malawi’s migration management systems and addressing regional migration challenges.

During the meeting, Her Excellency Fatma Ismail Said reaffirmed IOM’s dedication to supporting Malawi through strengthened border management systems, dignified repatriation programmes, and the promotion of safe and legal labour migration within the Southern African region.

She emphasized IOM’s commitment to working closely with the Government of Malawi in advancing secure, orderly, and humane migration practices that protect vulnerable populations while promoting national and regional stability.

Speaking during the engagement, Honourable Peter Mukhito expressed gratitude for IOM’s continued partnership and unwavering support to Malawi’s migration and humanitarian response efforts.

The Minister highlighted the increasing pressure the country is facing due to the rising number of refugees and asylum seekers, particularly at Dzaleka Refugee Camp, stressing the urgent need for stronger international cooperation and sustainable support mechanisms.

Honourable Mukhito further commended the strong collaboration between the Government of Malawi and IOM in promoting effective migration governance, refugee protection, and border security management.

The meeting also reflected the leadership and commitment of Honourable Peter Mukhito and His Excellency President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in safeguarding Malawi’s national interests while advancing humanitarian support systems and regional migration cooperation.
