The Football Legends Association (FLA) has raised K192 million towards its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and fundraising dinner and dance gala scheduled for August 29 in Lilongwe.
The latest boost comes from Simama Hotels and Austo Brake and Clutch, which have jointly contributed K8 million towards the initiative.
Simama Hotels has donated K5 million, while Austo Brake and Clutch has contributed K3 million.
Marumbo Kondowe, Head of Sales at Simama Hotels, said the company made the contribution to recognise former football players for the important role they played in representing Malawi and bringing pride to the country during their playing careers.
Kondowe said the support was also intended to contribute towards improving the welfare and quality of life of former players.
Meanwhile, Austin Kasito, owner of Austo Brake and Clutch, said his company decided to support the initiative because of his passion for football.
Kinnah Phiri, a member of the Football Legends Association board, has thanked companies, individuals and organisations that have supported the fundraising campaign.
Phiri said the contributions demonstrate appreciation for former football players and recognise their contribution to the development of football in Malawi.
FLA targets K250 million for former football players
The Football Legends Association is targeting K250 million through its fundraising campaign.
The association plans to use the money to provide former football players with access to medical care through a medical scheme and help them acquire vocational and other practical skills.
With K192 million already raised, the FLA needs a further K58 million to reach its K250 million target.
The fundraising campaign will culminate in the association’s AGM and fundraising dinner and dance gala in Lilongwe on August 29.
