China has begun testing a robot traffic officer in Yongkang, Zhejiang Province, as authorities explore how artificial intelligence and robotics can improve road safety and traffic management.
The robot is designed to direct traffic and remind drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to follow road-safety rules, particularly at busy intersections.
One of its notable features is its battery efficiency. The robot can reportedly operate for up to four hours after just 30 minutes of charging, allowing it to support traffic officers for extended periods.
The technology is not intended to replace human officers but to support them, improve traffic control and make road management more efficient.
The trial highlights China’s growing use of robotics and smart technology in everyday public services—and could offer a glimpse of how traffic management may look in the future.
