The proposed transformation would involve constructing an elevated bridge over the roundabout, supported by carefully engineered ramps that allow vehicles to move between major routes without unnecessary interruptions.

The central roundabout could feature attractive landscaping, palm trees, green lawns and a striking landmark that reflects Blantyre’s status as Malawi’s commercial capital.

The design concept in the accompanying image illustrates how modern road engineering can combine functionality, safety and beauty. However, the final design would need to be developed and approved by qualified engineers following traffic studies, environmental assessments and public consultations.

DPP’s Infrastructure Ambitions

The DPP’s 2025 manifesto promises a city roads modernisation programme for Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba and Mzuzu, alongside continued construction of flyovers and interchanges to address traffic congestion.

This commitment provides a policy basis for calling on President Mutharika’s administration to pursue an ambitious interchange at Kameza.

The Roads Authority has also been involved in plans to rehabilitate the M1 corridor between Lilongwe and Kameza, with road rehabilitation contracts announced in 2026.

For many motorists, improving the road surface is important, but long-term planning should also consider the capacity of major junctions to accommodate increasing traffic volumes.

A properly designed Kameza interchange could improve connections for motorists travelling towards Limbe, Chileka International Airport, the city centre and the M1 highway towards Lilongwe.

Economic Benefits Beyond the Roads

The benefits of such a project could extend beyond reducing traffic congestion.

More efficient transport links could help businesses move goods, improve access to commercial centres and reduce delays for commuters. Construction could also create employment opportunities, while improved connectivity could support investment in surrounding areas.

Nevertheless, the government would need to establish the project’s cost, financing arrangements, construction timeline and expected economic returns before committing public resources.

Transparency in procurement and strict supervision of construction would be essential to ensure that taxpayers receive value for money.

A Lasting Legacy for Blantyre

President Mutharika and the DPP have an opportunity to make Kameza a priority in Malawi’s infrastructure modernisation agenda.

The appeal is straightforward: do not stop at rehabilitating roads; plan for the future by building the transport infrastructure that a growing city will need.

If supported by sound engineering, sustainable financing and accountable implementation, a modern Kameza interchange could become one of Blantyre’s most recognisable infrastructure landmarks.

For Malawi Freedom Network, the accompanying image is a vision of what Kameza could look like if the government turns its infrastructure ambitions into a practical, well-planned development project. It is an illustrative concept, not a confirmed final design.
