Malawi plans to connect 2,000 primary and secondary schools to the internet under the World Bank-supported Digital Malawi Acceleration Project (DMAP), Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka has announced.
Speaking at the opening of the 19th UbuntuNet-Connect Conference in Lilongwe, Msaka said the Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN) would play a central role in implementing the initiative.
The project aims to expand access to digital learning resources, giving learners and teachers greater opportunities to use online educational materials and modern technology.
MAREN Chief Executive Officer Solomon Dindi said reliable digital infrastructure was essential for students and researchers to access knowledge, collaborate across borders and participate in the global research community.
He added that research and education networks create opportunities for learning, scientific discovery and innovation by connecting people and institutions.
The initiative is expected to help bridge Malawi’s digital divide and improve access to educational opportunities, particularly for learners who have limited access to digital resources.
