The United Transformation Movement (UTM) elective convention is underway at the Chisanga Complex in Mzuzu, with around 800 delegates expected to attend.
The event has drawn representatives from various parties, including the People’s Party, National Development Party, Alliance for Democracy, Democratic Progressive Party, and United Democratic Front.
Tight security measures are in effect, with police and private security personnel verifying IDs and scanning everyone entering the venue.
The entrance is heavily guarded to ensure the safety of all attendees.
The convention aims to elect new leaders to guide the party in the 2025 general elections and beyond.
Four prominent members are vying for the party’s top spot: Newton Kambala, Dalitso Kabambe, Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka, and Patricia Kaliati.
Speaking to the reporters, Secretary General for the Party, Patricia Kaliati emphasized the importance of maintaining unity within the party and dismissed rumors of internal disputes.
Preparations for the convention have been underway since March, with party president Michael Usi initially blessing the event.
However, Usi has since announced that he will not attend the convention due to concerns over rule manipulation.
The convention has received support from other parties, with UDF Director of Women-North, Lucia Issa, stating that they are attending to show unity and support.
DPP vice president for the north, Jappie Mhango, is also in attendance.
The event is themed “SKC’s Legacy Beyond 2025: Building a Future of Fairness, Equality, and Transformation”. This theme reflects the party’s commitment to upholding the legacy of its founder, Saulos Chilima.
