In a gesture of goodwill and commitment to giving back to their alma mater, the Phalombe Secondary School Alumni has donated 200 mattresses worth approximately K11.5 million to the school. The donation, which is aimed at improving the living conditions of the students, was handed over to the school on Saturday, 1st March.
According to Robert Nazitwere, Publicity Secretary for Phalombe Secondary Alumni, the donation was motivated by a needs assessment that was carried out at the school. “We established that the school was in dire need of mattresses for the students, and we felt duty-bound to come in and assist,” he said.
Nazitwere revealed that the current state of the school’s dormitories is deplorable, with inadequate and worn-out mattresses. “Most of the beds are in a dilapidated state, and we believe that this has the potential to negatively affect the students’ performance,” he said.
The alumni managed to raise funds for the donation through various fundraising initiatives, including a “Buy-a-Mattress” campaign. “We encouraged our members to commit to buying at least one mattress, and the response was overwhelming,” Nazitwere said.
The donation is expected to have a significant impact on the students and the school as a whole. “We hope that this donation will motivate the students to excel in their studies and instill in them a culture of responsibility and ownership,” Nazitwere said.
The alumni has also expressed its commitment to continuing to support the school in various ways. “We have a responsibility towards our alma mater, and we will continue to assist the school in every way we can,” Nazitwere said.
The donation has been welcomed by the school administration, teachers, and students. “We are grateful to the alumni for this generous donation, and we are confident that it will make a significant difference in the lives of our students,” said Lovemore Likupha, the school’s headmaster,
