The much anticipated Democratic Progressive Party-DPP National Governing Council-NGC meeting tommorow has been dealt a heavy and sudden blow following a court injunction stopping the party from proceeding with the arrangement.
Billy Malata, who is the party’s Deputy Director of Political Affairs says some people being invited to the meeting are not NGC members and the party’s constitution doesn’t recognize them.
High Court Judge Howard Pemba has since restrained the party’s secretary general, Grezelder Jeffrey and spokesperson Shadric Namalomba from going on with the meeting until a further court order is made.
Meanwhile, Malata’s lawyer, Wapona Kita describes this as a constitutional matter within the DPP top brass which will determine who should attend and vote at the party’s convention.
Among others, the meeting, initially slated for Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi, was expected to come up with dates for a convention in readiness for the 2025 general elections.
The party last held its official NGC meeting in 2018. DPP has never seen peace among its ranks and files after being booted out of government in June 2020. There have been endless cracks and camps which political analysts attribute to poor leadership.
