At least 20 people are to go unopposed at the People’s Development Party (PDP) convention currently underway at COMESA Hall in Blantyre.
Interim Party President, Kondwani Nankhumwa, interim secretary-general, Simeon Phiri, and National Publicity Secretary, Rhodes Msonkho, are among those who will assume their roles without any challenge.
Rose Sakala and Phoebe Tembenuzeni are vying for the position of first vice president, while Bassie Chirambo and Kate Mkandawire are contesting for the position of Director of Women.
Convention Chairperson Bassie Chirambo acknowledged that organizing the event was not an easy task, as they faced numerous challenges.
“However, we are now successful, and we appreciate the support we received from you,” she said.
In his remarks, Nankhumwa began by giving a recap of how the party has fared since its establishment in April this year.
“One of the key individuals who could not attend our convention is Dr. Saulos Chilima, who was killed in a plane crash,” he said.
He then stated that the convention will provide a clear roadmap for the party’s future direction in the coming years.
The convention, initially slated to start at 6pm, was delayed by almost three hours.
