Two die, three seriously injured in Dedza road accident

Dedza Police Station, has confirmed the death of two people while three others sustained serious injuries in a motor vehicle collision at Nkutu village in the district on Monday.

According to the district’s police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant, Beatrice Jefita, the deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Robert Mfutumalo and Violet Mzoma aged 42.

Jefita told Malawi News Agency (Mana) in an interview Tuesday that the accident which involved a Ford Ranger registration number LL 11326 was being driven by Hastings Mzoma from the direction of Dedza Roadblock towards Ntcheu with his wife (now deceased) on board.

“Upon arrival at Nkutu, he hit an unregistered Lifan Motorcycle which carried a passenger and was crossing the road from left to right,” said Jefita.

The police PRO further said consequently, the driver lost control of the motor vehicle and swerved to the offside lane where he collided head on with a Toyota Land Cruiser registration number KK 9706 which was coming from the opposite direction.

“Following the impact, the rider, (Robert Mfutumalo) and the passenger from Ford Ranger motor vehicle sustained severe head injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Dedza District Hospital, while the other three are still receiving treatment at the same health facility,” she added.

She said police in the district are appealing to all road users to always follow road safety measures to avoid accidents.

Robert Mfutumalo hailed from Kwatali Village, Tete district in Mozambique while Violet Mzoma hailed from Malola village, Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba.
